Shishya (Disciple)

Śiṣya means "disciple," "student," or "one who is disciplined" in Sanskrit. It refers to a dedicated student who receives knowledge and teachings from a Guru (teacher). The term implies not only intellectual learning but also a commitment to live and practice in accordance with the teachings.

In the yogic tradition, knowledge is primarily passed down through an oral lineage from a Guru to a Śiṣya. The relationship between the two is considered sacred and is founded on mutual respect, trust, and devotion. The role of the Śiṣya is to approach the teachings with humility, an open mind, and a deep desire for self-realization.

This concept is foundational to understanding the traditional path of yoga, which is more than a self-guided practice. It is often referenced in philosophical discussions to highlight the importance of seeking guidance from an experienced teacher.
