Bhakti Yoga (The Yoga of Devotion)

Bhakti Yoga

भक्ति योग

Bhakti Yoga is the path of love and devotion — the union with the divine through the heart.

Meaning of the Term

Bhakti Yoga is the path of love and devotion — the union with the divine through the heart. From "bhaj" (to share, to adore), it channels the full force of human emotion toward the sacred, transforming longing itself into a means of liberation.

Background

One of the four classical paths of Yoga alongside Karma, Jñāna, and Rāja, Bhakti is often called the most accessible, for it asks not renunciation or scholarship but wholehearted love. Through devotion, the sense of a separate self dissolves into the beloved. — Bhagavad Gītā, Ch. 12.

Usage in Yoga Context

Expressed through chanting (Kīrtan), Mantra, prayer, and the offering of one's practice to something greater than oneself. Instructors invoke it when practice is dedicated with love rather than performed for achievement. It offers a path for those whose nature is devotional rather than analytical.

Notes for Instructors

Present devotion inclusively — it may be directed to a chosen deity, to life, to truth, or to the sacred as each student conceives it. Emphasize that Bhakti transforms emotion into a doorway, not an escape; its fruit is humility and open-heartedness.
