Seva means selfless service — doing what needs to be done without seeking payment or recognition. Because it releases the "I" from the doer of the act, the service itself becomes a way of thinning the self.
Seva is what Karma Yoga’s "action without attachment to results" becomes when it is brought down into the concrete work of a day. In ashrams and communities, the unnoticed tasks — cleaning, cooking, caring — have been placed at the centre of training. Work done where no one is watching is held to be the most valuable, precisely because no desire for recognition can enter it.
It is practised as tidying the studio, a word to someone who has come for the first time, preparation that no one notices. Guide practitioners not to wait for a special occasion, but to answer the need that stands in front of them now.
Watch that service does not turn into self-sacrifice, or into a substitute for the wish to be acknowledged. Serving until one is exhausted is not the maturity of seva. Convey quietly that the fullness of the one who gives is what lightens the burden of the one who receives.
