Dharana (Yogic Concentration Technique)
Dhāraṇā
धारणा
It is a yogic technique of focusing the mind on a single object or idea, and maintaining that focus with stability.
Dharana means “holding,” “concentration,” or “fixing” in Sanskrit. It is a yogic technique of focusing the mind on a single object or idea, and maintaining that focus with stability. As one of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, it refers specifically to the disciplined practice of mental fixation.
Dharana is the sixth stage in the Ashtanga Yoga system. It marks a transition from external practices to internal mental disciplines. It provides the groundwork for deeper meditative absorption (Dhyana) and ultimately Samadhi.
Dharana is practiced by fixing attention on a mantra, image, breath, or specific focal point. Instructors may use cues like “Hold your awareness on your breath” or “Gently keep your focus between the eyebrows”. Practiced regularly, this technique sharpens mental clarity and trains sustained attention.
Emphasize that Dharana is not just passive focus, but an active training of the mind through yogic intention. Remind students that wandering thoughts are normal, and that gently returning focus is part of the technique.
