Meaning of the Term

Vairāgya means "non-attachment," "detachment," or "absence of passion" in Sanskrit. In Yoga, it refers to the practice of releasing attachment to specific objects, outcomes, past events, future expectations, or even one's own thoughts and emotions, thereby becoming free from them.

Background

An essential concept for liberation from suffering, letting go brings mental calmness and true happiness. It is not about resignation but a wisdom of accepting things as they are and surrendering to the flow.

Usage in Yoga Context

In Savasana (Corpse Pose), students are guided to "let go of all bodily tension." In meditation, thoughts and emotions are encouraged to be "let go and observed." Instructors convey that letting go creates mental space and opens new possibilities.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize that "letting go is not about being indifferent, but about having affection while not being bound by it." Encourage starting with letting go of small attachments.
