Light Self (Light Aspect)

Prakāśa

प्रकाश

In Yoga philosophy, it refers to the pure aspect of our true self (Atman) or consciousness, or the positive qualities we possess (e.g., love, joy, wisdom, courage).

Meaning of the Term

Prakāśa means "light," "radiance," or "clarity" in Sanskrit. In Yoga philosophy, it refers to the pure aspect of our true self (Atman) or consciousness, or the positive qualities we possess (e.g., love, joy, wisdom, courage).

Background

It is the opposite of the "shadow self" and represents the parts we consciously cultivate and express. Recognizing and radiating the light self brings joy and fulfillment to life and positively influences others.

Usage in Yoga Context

In meditation and affirmations, students are guided to "radiate inner light" or "recognize their good qualities." At the end of class, the intention to "share inner light" may be expressed. Instructors convey the importance of recognizing that the light self is always present within us.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize that "cultivating the light self is not about denying the shadow self, but integrating both to radiate as a whole being." Encourage students to consciously focus on their positive qualities and growth in daily life.
