It is a standing pose where legs are widely spread and the body folds deeply forward, profoundly stretching the hamstrings and inner thighs.
Prasārita Pādottanāsana is comprised of "Prasārita" (expanded, spread out), "Pāda" (foot), "Uttāna" (intensely stretched), and "Āsana" (posture/pose). It is a standing pose where legs are widely spread and the body folds deeply forward, profoundly stretching the hamstrings and inner thighs.
This pose enhances flexibility in the entire back of the legs and hip joints, promoting blood circulation in the pelvis. It is also believed to increase blood flow to the head, cultivating mental calmness and concentration. By bringing the head below the heart, it helps relax the nervous system.
Stand with legs wide apart, firmly grounding the entire soles of the feet into the earth. Fold deeply forward from the hip joints, placing hands on the floor or between the feet. Release neck tension, allowing the crown of the head to draw towards the floor.
Emphasize "not locking the knees" and "feeling the stretch in the hamstrings," advising against forced forward bends. Guide students to fold from the hip joints, promoting a "deepening stretch with each exhale."
