*

Also known asCrescent Lunge / Crescent High Lunge

Meaning of the Term

High Lunge is a lunge pose where one leg is extended far back, and the heel of the back foot is lifted off the floor. It strengthens the lower body, extends the hip flexors, and cultivates core stability.

Background

This pose effectively strengthens major lower body muscles including quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. It stretches the hip flexors (like the psoas), which can become tight from prolonged sitting. It also enhances balance and concentration.

Usage in Yoga Context

One leg is stepped far back, with the back heel lifted into a high lunge position. The front knee is bent at 90 degrees, with the heel directly below it. The torso is upright, and both arms extend overhead alongside the ears.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "pressing the back heel towards the back wall" and "keeping the front knee from collapsing inward" to promote lower body stability and proper alignment. If balance is challenging, suggest widening the stance or placing hands on the hips for support.
