Revolved Triangle Pose

Parivṛtta Trikoṇāsana

परिवृत्त त्रिकोणासन

It is a standing twisting pose that simultaneously performs a deep spinal twist and hamstring extension.

Meaning of the Term

Parivṛtta Trikoṇāsana is comprised of "Parivṛtta" (revolved, rotated), "Trikoṇa" (triangle), and "Āsana" (posture/pose). It is a standing twisting pose that simultaneously performs a deep spinal twist and hamstring extension.

Background

This pose expands overall spinal flexibility and range of motion, while enhancing core stability. It stimulates internal organs, which is believed to activate digestive functions. It cultivates balance and concentration, fostering mental strength.

Usage in Yoga Context

Stand with feet wide apart, turning one foot out 90 degrees and keeping the other foot parallel. As the body folds forward, the hand opposite the outward-turned foot is placed on the floor or a block, and the other arm extends towards the ceiling, twisting the torso. Gaze is directed towards the upper hand or forward, maintaining deep breaths.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "folding from the hip joints and maintaining a long spine while twisting" to avoid lower back strain. If balance is challenging, suggest using a block under the lower hand, prioritizing stability over perfect form.
