Triangle Pose

Trikoṇāsana

त्रिकोणासन

It is a standing pose where the body forms a triangle, deepening the lateral extension and hip opening.

Meaning of the Term

Trikonāsana is comprised of "Tri" (three), "Koṇa" (angle), and "Āsana" (posture/pose). It is a standing pose where the body forms a triangle, deepening the lateral extension and hip opening.

Background

This pose significantly lengthens the side body and enhances spinal flexibility. It cultivates awareness of the entire body's energy, from the soles of the feet to the fingertips, and is believed to improve balance and concentration. It is one of the ancient fundamental standing asanas.

Usage in Yoga Context

Stand with feet wide apart, turning one foot out 90 degrees and keeping the other foot parallel. Lengthen the side body as you fold sideways, placing the lower hand on the ankle or floor, and extending the upper arm straight up. Open the chest and direct the gaze towards the upper hand or forward.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "the alignment of the top and bottom arms in a straight line" and "the force of pressing both feet into the earth," communicating full body connection. If hip opening is insufficient, suggest using a block under the lower hand and advise against forcing the lateral bend.
