अर्ध मत्स्येन्द्रासन

Also known as Half Lord of the Fishes Pose, it is a quintessential seated twisting asana.

Also known asHalf Lord of the Fishes Pose

Meaning of the Term

Ardha Matsyendrāsana is comprised of "Ardha" (half), "Matsyendra" (King of Fishes, name of a great yogi), and "Āsana" (posture/pose). Also known as Half Lord of the Fishes Pose, it is a quintessential seated twisting asana.

Background

By twisting the entire spine, this pose enhances spinal flexibility and stimulates internal organs, activating digestive system functions. It is particularly believed to aid liver and kidney detoxification, while cultivating mental calmness and concentration. It also promotes purification of the mind.

Usage in Yoga Context

One knee is bent with the sole of the foot on the floor, and the other leg is either extended or bent with the heel close to the buttocks, placed outside the bent knee. The opposite arm is hooked outside the bent knee, and on an exhale, the torso twists deeply. The gaze is directed backward, and the spine remains long.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "pressing the sitting bones firmly into the floor and lengthening the spine while twisting" to avoid lower back strain. Highlight "the synchronization of breath and twist," guiding students to extend the spine on inhalation and deepen the twist on exhalation.
