Plow Pose
Halāsana
हलासन
Like a farming plow, this pose folds the body with legs extended overhead, combining elements of backbend and inversion.
Halāsana is comprised of "Hala" (plow) and "Āsana" (posture/pose). Like a farming plow, this pose folds the body with legs extended overhead, combining elements of backbend and inversion.
This pose enhances overall spinal flexibility, particularly alleviating tension in the upper back and neck. It stimulates the digestive system, which is believed to aid internal organ function. It also stimulates the thyroid gland, promoting mental calmness and introspection.
From Shoulder Stand (Sarvāṅgāsana), slowly lower both legs overhead, bringing the toes to the floor behind the head. Arms can rest alongside the body or be interlaced on the floor. Support the body firmly on the shoulders to avoid neck strain.
Prioritize "supporting the body with the back and shoulders, rather than forcing the feet to the floor," to protect the neck. If hamstrings are tight, suggest a slight bend in the knees or placing a block under the feet to prioritize spinal length.
