Wind-Relieving Pose

Pavanamuktāsana

पवनमुक्तासन

It is a supine pose that helps release trapped gas in the abdomen and alleviates digestive discomfort.

Meaning of the Term

Pavanamuktāsana is comprised of "Pavan" (wind, air) and "Mukta" (to release), and "Āsana" (posture/pose). It is a supine pose that helps release trapped gas in the abdomen and alleviates digestive discomfort.

Background

By compressing the abdomen, this pose stimulates the digestive system, which is believed to help alleviate constipation and indigestion. It also gently stretches the lower back, easing lumbar tension. It promotes mind-body relaxation.

Usage in Yoga Context

Lie on your back, bend one or both knees towards the chest, and clasp hands around the knees. Maintain the knees drawn towards the chest while breathing slowly and deeply. Ensure the neck and shoulders remain relaxed and free from tension.

Notes for Instructors

Convey the sensation of "gentle compression on the abdomen as knees are hugged," promoting mild stimulation to the internal organs. If lower back strain is a concern, suggest practicing one leg at a time and avoiding forceful pulling.
