Rajas

रजस्

It is one of the three Gunas (qualities) in Samkhya philosophy, referring to qualities associated with action, change, excitement, and desire.

Meaning of the Term

Rajas means "activity," "passion," or "movement" in Sanskrit. It is one of the three Gunas (qualities) in Samkhya philosophy, referring to qualities associated with action, change, excitement, and desire.

Background

When Rajas is dominant, the mind is active and passionately driven towards goals. However, in excess, it can lead to restlessness, irritation, stress, and burnout.

Usage in Yoga Context

Gentle asanas (poses) and cooling breathing techniques are recommended to calm excessive Rajas. Stimulants (caffeine, spicy foods) and excessive activity are explained as elements that increase Rajas. Instructors convey the importance of balancing Rajas and taking temporary rest from excessive activity.

Notes for Instructors

Convey that "Rajas is necessary energy for action, but balance is crucial." Encourage students to observe their activity levels and mental state.
