Tamas (Inertia, Darkness)

Tamas

तमस्

It is one of the three Gunas (qualities) in Samkhya philosophy, referring to qualities associated with stagnation, lethargy, ignorance, and weight.

Meaning of the Term

Tamas means "inactivity," "darkness," or "heaviness" in Sanskrit. It is one of the three Gunas (qualities) in Samkhya philosophy, referring to qualities associated with stagnation, lethargy, ignorance, and weight.

Background

When Tamas is dominant, the mind is dull, motivation is low, and one feels lethargic. In excess, it can lead to depression, excessive sleep, chronic fatigue, and addiction.

Usage in Yoga Context

Active asanas (poses) and stimulating breathing techniques are recommended to balance Tamas. Processed foods, stale foods, and overeating are explained as elements that increase Tamas. Instructors explain the effects of Tamas and convey the importance of being active.

Notes for Instructors

Convey that "Tamas also brings rest and stability, but in excess, it leads to stagnation." Encourage students to observe their energy levels and find an appropriate balance of activity and rest.
