Hero Pose

Vīrāsana

वीरासन

It refers to a seated posture that cultivates a strong and stable mind, like that of a hero.

Meaning of the Term

Vīrāsana is comprised of "Vīra" (hero, brave one) and "Āsana" (posture/seat). It refers to a seated posture that cultivates a strong and stable mind, like that of a hero. It enhances leg flexibility and is suitable for meditation.

Background

Often used for meditation and Pranayama practice, this pose specifically improves flexibility in the knees and ankles. It is also believed to stimulate the digestive system and alleviate sciatica. It is said to enhance concentration.

Usage in Yoga Context

From a kneeling position, widen the knees and place the tops of the feet flat on the floor, lowering the sitting bones between the feet. If there is strain on the ankles or knees, use a block or cushion under the sitting bones to elevate the hips. Adjust the body to sit stably for extended periods of meditation or chanting.

Notes for Instructors

To avoid knee strain, especially for students with stiff ankles, ensure they do not force the pose and actively encourage the use of props. Emphasize "pressing the tops of the feet into the floor" to highlight lower body stability.
