Cow Face Pose

Gomukhāsana

गोमुखासन

Named for the way the legs resemble the shape of a cow's face when intertwined, this pose simultaneously enhances flexibility in the hip and shoulder joints.

Meaning of the Term

Gomukhāsana is comprised of "Go" (cow), "Mukha" (face), and "Āsana" (posture/seat). Named for the way the legs resemble the shape of a cow's face when intertwined, this pose simultaneously enhances flexibility in the hip and shoulder joints.

Background

This asana specifically focuses on increasing the range of motion in two major joints of the body: the shoulders and hips. It helps to correct imbalances between the left and right sides of the body and improves posture. It is particularly effective for addressing stiffness often caused by prolonged desk work.

Usage in Yoga Context

One leg is bent with the heel placed outside the opposite hip, and the other leg is stacked on top, with the foot resting over the hip. Both arms are clasped behind the back; if they don't reach, a strap can be used. Emphasize performing the pose without forcing, given the natural asymmetry often felt.

Notes for Instructors

Guide students to be aware of the interconnectedness of the hip and shoulder joints, encouraging them to "deepen the opening with breath." Acknowledge that the body's sensation may differ on each side, leading them to respect their body's unique responses.
