बद्धकोणासन

It refers to a seated posture where the soles of the feet are joined and the knees open out to the sides, resembling a butterfly opening its wings.

Also known asButterfly Pose / Cobbler's Pose

Meaning of the Term

Baddhakonāsana is comprised of "Baddha" (bound, joined), "Koṇa" (angle), and "Āsana" (posture/seat). It refers to a seated posture where the soles of the feet are joined and the knees open out to the sides, resembling a butterfly opening its wings.

Background

This pose is effective for increasing flexibility in the hip adductor muscles (inner thighs) and is believed to promote blood circulation in the pelvic area. It is also considered beneficial for reproductive health and is often recommended for women.

Usage in Yoga Context

Students sit firmly on their sitting bones, bring the soles of their feet together, and draw their heels towards the perineum. The knees open out to the sides towards the floor, and the spine is lengthened. Depending on hip flexibility, students can adjust the distance between their feet and body, or place blocks under their knees for support.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "external rotation from the hip joints," advising students not to forcefully press their knees to the floor. Add verbal cues that promote mental relaxation along with hip release.
