Half Lotus Pose

Ardha Padmāsana

अर्ध पद्मासन

It refers to half the form of Lotus Pose, with only one foot placed on the opposite thigh.

Meaning of the Term

Ardha Padmāsana is comprised of "Ardha" (half) and "Padmāsana" (Lotus Position). It refers to half the form of Lotus Pose, with only one foot placed on the opposite thigh. It's widely used as an alternative when full Lotus Pose is challenging.

Background

As it places less strain on the hips and knees than the full Lotus Pose, it enables more practitioners to comfortably engage in meditation and breathing techniques. It is also effective as a preparatory step for Lotus Pose, gradually promoting body flexibility.

Usage in Yoga Context

One heel is brought close to the perineum, and the top of the other foot is placed at the crease of the opposite thigh. Students adjust their pelvis to ensure both knees are stable on the floor and the spine is lengthened. This pose is suitable for extended seated meditation and is believed to aid in maintaining concentration.

Notes for Instructors

Encourage students to alternate legs equally when practicing to promote body balance. If students experience pain in the ankles or knees, suggest alternatives like Easy Pose (Sukhasana) and advise against forcing a deep bind.
