Camel Pose

Uṣṭrāsana

उष्ट्रासन

It is a deep backbend pose from a kneeling position, where the entire body arches like a camel, widely opening the chest and throat.

Meaning of the Term

Uṣṭrāsana is comprised of "Uṣṭra" (camel) and "Āsana" (posture/pose). It is a deep backbend pose from a kneeling position, where the entire body arches like a camel, widely opening the chest and throat.

Background

This pose significantly enhances overall spinal flexibility, particularly increasing the range of motion in the thoracic and lumbar spine. It stimulates the thymus gland and thyroid gland, activating respiratory and endocrine functions. It is also believed to cultivate mental openness and courage, boosting confidence.

Usage in Yoga Context

Kneel with knees hip-width apart. On an exhale, arch the upper body backward, grasping the heels with both hands or placing hands on the lower back. Lift the chest towards the ceiling; if there is no neck strain, allow the head to drop back.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "opening the chest into the backbend, rather than just arching the lower back," to avoid lumbar strain. If neck strain is a concern, suggest tucking the chin slightly and gazing diagonally upwards.
