Crocodile Pose

Makārāsana

मकारासन

It is a resting pose where you lie on your stomach, relaxing the entire body as if a crocodile floating on the water's surface.

Meaning of the Term

Makārāsana is comprised of "Makara" (crocodile, sea monster) and "Āsana" (posture/pose). It is a resting pose where you lie on your stomach, relaxing the entire body as if a crocodile floating on the water's surface.

Background

This pose helps alleviate tension in the lower back and back muscles, and relaxes the digestive system. It is particularly effective for soothing lower back pain and reducing stress. It promotes deep breathing and aids in mind-body recovery.

Usage in Yoga Context

Lie on your stomach, stacking hands to rest the forehead on them as a pillow, or extending arms forward with the forehead on the floor. Spread legs wide, allowing toes to naturally fall outwards and heels inwards to relax the hip joints. Release all physical tension and focus on deep abdominal breathing.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize "surrendering the body's weight to the earth and completely relaxing" to facilitate the release of physical tension. If students experience lower back discomfort, suggest placing a blanket or cushion under the abdomen for support.
