Uḍḍīyāna Bandha

उड्डीयान बन्ध

Meaning of the Term

Uḍḍīyāna means "to fly up, to lift up," and Bandha means "to bind, to lock." It is a Prana (life force energy) lock performed after a complete exhalation, where the abdomen is drawn inward and upward, lifting the diaphragm into the rib cage.

Background

This Bandha is believed to massage the abdominal organs, enhance digestive function, and activate Agni (digestive fire). By drawing Apana (descending Prana) upwards to unite with Prana, it encourages energy ascent through the Sushumna Nadi (central energy channel) and is thought to lead to Kundalini awakening.

Usage in Yoga Context

Primarily practiced during Pranayama (breathing techniques), especially after exhaling completely in Kapalabhati or Bhastrika. Guided by instructions like "draw your abdomen towards your spine and further lift it under your ribs." Instructors emphasize safe execution and its numerous benefits.

Notes for Instructors

Clearly state contraindications such as "practicing on an empty stomach," and avoiding it during "pregnancy, high blood pressure, heart disease, or ulcers." Highlight its internal organ massage effect and energetic benefits.
