Prana (Life Force Energy)

Prāṇa

प्राण

It is the fundamental, vital energy that animates all living things and pervades the entire universe.

Meaning of the Term

Prāṇa means "life force energy" or "breath" in Sanskrit. It is the fundamental, vital energy that animates all living things and pervades the entire universe. It is the bridge between the physical and the subtle body.

Background

According to Yogic philosophy, Prana flows through the subtle energy channels (Nadis) and collects in the energy centers (Chakras). The health and vitality of the body-mind system are determined by the quality and quantity of this life force. Pranayama is the primary method for controlling and expanding this energy.

Usage in Yoga Context

In every practice, instructors guide students to become aware of Prana flowing with the breath. Inhalation is seen as the intake of Prana, and exhalation as the release of stagnant energy. The goal is to cultivate a smooth, consistent flow of this life force throughout the body.

Notes for Instructors

Remind students that they are not just breathing air, but consciously drawing in Prana with each inhale. Emphasize that a calm breath is a sign of a steady mind and a balanced flow of this energy.
