Meaning of the Term

Jālandhara means "holding the net" or "holding the brain," and Bandha means "to bind, to lock." It is a Prana (life force energy) lock where the chin is drawn towards the sternal notch, constricting the throat.

Background

This Bandha aims to prevent Prana (life force energy) from rising excessively into the head, containing energy within the torso. It is also said to stimulate the throat's nerve plexuses and regulate thyroid and parathyroid gland functions. It is deeply associated with the Vishuddha Chakra (Throat Chakra).

Usage in Yoga Context

Primarily practiced during Pranayama (breathing techniques), especially when retaining breath (Kumbhaka). Guided by instructions like "gently tuck your chin and close the back of your throat." Instructors advise students to perform it gently and avoid straining the neck.

Notes for Instructors

Convey its important role in "preventing Prana leakage and containing energy within the body." Advise caution or avoidance for students with hyperthyroidism or cervical spine issues.
