Meaning of the Term

Yoga Nidrā is comprised of "Yoga" (Yoga) and "Nidrā" (sleep). It refers to a deep relaxation and meditation technique often described as "yogic sleep" or "conscious sleep," where the body is in a state of deep rest while the consciousness remains awake.

Background

By releasing mind-body tension and inducing a deeply relaxed state, it is believed to reduce stress and anxiety, improve insomnia, enhance concentration and memory, and activate self-healing abilities. It is also used to access the subconscious mind and promote self-transformation.

Usage in Yoga Context

Practiced lying on the back in Savasana (Corpse Pose), following the instructor's guided meditation to consciously relax each part of the body. The body remains still, while awareness is directed to specific areas or through guided imagery. Falling asleep is acceptable, but the aim is to maintain awareness as much as possible.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize the importance of the state where "the body rests while consciousness remains," guiding students to balance relaxation and focus. Recommend adjusting room temperature and lighting, and using props like blankets, to create a safe and comfortable environment for deep relaxation.
