Also known asMarichi's Pose / Sage Twist Pose / Sage's Pose
Marīchyāsana is named after the ancient Indian sage Marichi. It's a seated twist where one knee is bent and the body is twisted to clasp the hands behind the back. It stimulates the digestive system and enhances spinal flexibility.
This is an important twisting asana included in the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. It is believed to stimulate organ function and aid detoxification. Additionally, it improves spinal mobility and alleviates back tension. It enhances concentration and awareness.
One leg is extended forward, while the other knee is bent with the sole of the foot on the floor. The body then twists towards the bent knee. If possible, the arm on the side of the extended leg wraps around the bent knee to clasp hands behind the back. Students deepen the twist with each exhale, maintaining the posture without forcing it.
Emphasize twisting from the thoracic spine, not just the lower back, to protect the lumbar spine. Highlight the synchronicity of breath and twist, guiding students to deepen the twist on exhalation.
