Vayu Mudra (Wind Gesture)

Vāyu Mudrā

वायु मुद्रा

It is a hand gesture where the index finger is placed at the base of the thumb, and the thumb gently presses down on it.

Meaning of the Term

Vāyu Mudrā is comprised of "Vāyu" (wind, air) and "Mudrā" (seal). It is a hand gesture where the index finger is placed at the base of the thumb, and the thumb gently presses down on it. It aims to calm the excessive movement of wind (Vayu) within the body and restore balance.

Background

The index finger symbolizes the air element; by pressing it with the thumb (fire element), it is believed to regulate the balance of wind within the body. It is said to be effective in alleviating symptoms caused by Vata imbalances, such as gas, bloating, joint pain, sciatica, tremors, and anxiety.

Usage in Yoga Context

Formed during meditation and Pranayama, with palms facing up on the knees. Used when feeling bodily disharmony or mental restlessness. Instructors explain the calming effect of this Mudra during guidance.

Notes for Instructors

Encourage students to "focus awareness on the fingertips and feel the sensation of the wind energy settling." Recommend daily practice for students prone to joint pain, indigestion, or anxiety.
