Surya Mudra (Sun Gesture)
Sūrya Mudrā
सूर्य मुद्रा
It is a hand gesture where the ring finger is placed at the base of the thumb, and the thumb gently presses down on it.
Sūrya Mudrā is comprised of "Sūrya" (sun) and "Mudrā" (seal). It is a hand gesture where the ring finger is placed at the base of the thumb, and the thumb gently presses down on it. It aims to activate the fire element (Agni) within the body and boost metabolism.
The ring finger symbolizes the earth element; by pressing it with the thumb (fire element), it is believed to reduce the earth element and amplify the fire element. It is said to be effective in promoting weight loss, aiding digestion, activating thyroid function, and alleviating cold hands and feet.
Formed during meditation and Pranayama, with palms facing up on the knees. Used when seeking to boost metabolism or warm the body. Instructors explain the warming effect of this Mudra during guidance.
Encourage students to "focus awareness on the fingertips and feel the sensation of warmth generating from within the body." Recommend daily practice for students aiming for weight management, digestive improvement, or alleviation of coldness.
