उज्जायी प्राणायाम
It is a breathing technique performed by slightly constricting the back of the throat, creating a frictional sound, also known as the "Victorious Breath."
Also known asOcean Breath
Ujjāyī means "victorious, conquering" in Sanskrit. It is a breathing technique performed by slightly constricting the back of the throat, creating a frictional sound, also known as the "Victorious Breath."
By constricting the throat, it controls the speed and depth of breath, generating internal heat (Agni). This frictional sound is believed to enhance concentration, calm the mind, and deepen meditative states.
Used throughout asana practice in styles that synchronize movement with breath, such as Vinyasa Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. Guided with imagery like "making a sound like the ocean or waves from the back of your throat." Instructors encourage awareness of the breath sound and focusing on its rhythm.
Emphasize that "the sound is not the goal; it is a tool for controlling breath and enhancing concentration." Guide students to produce the sound gently to avoid straining the throat.
