Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath)

Kapālabhāti

कपालभाति

It is a pump-like breathing technique characterized by forceful, short exhalations, with inhalations occurring naturally.

Meaning of the Term

Kapālabhāti is comprised of "Kapāla" (skull) and "Bhāti" (to shine, to illuminate). It is a pump-like breathing technique characterized by forceful, short exhalations, with inhalations occurring naturally. It is also known as "Skull Shining Breath."

Background

It is believed to purify the lungs and respiratory system, and supply fresh oxygen to the brain, enhancing mental clarity, concentration, and vitality. It generates internal heat (Agni), stimulates the digestive system, and aids in expelling mucus and toxins, also considered a type of purification technique (Kriya).

Usage in Yoga Context

Primarily practiced seated during Pranayama (breathing techniques). Explained as "forcefully exhaling by drawing the abdomen inward, with inhalation naturally occurring as the abdomen relaxes," performed rhythmically. Instructors clearly guide the synchronization of abdominal movement and breath.

Notes for Instructors

Clearly state contraindications such as "pregnancy, menstruation, high blood pressure, heart disease, dizziness, or epilepsy," prioritizing safety. Advise against straining or hyperventilating, encouraging practice within a comfortable range.
