Meaning of the Term

Complete Breath refers to a fundamental Yoga breathing technique that combines abdominal, thoracic, and clavicular breathing to breathe deeply and fully, using the entire lung capacity.

Background

It activates the entire respiratory system and maximizes oxygen intake, thereby efficiently supplying Prana (life force energy) throughout the body. It is believed to bring deep mind-body relaxation, stress reduction, enhanced concentration, and mental tranquility.

Usage in Yoga Context

Frequently taught as an introduction to Pranayama (breathing techniques) practice or as preparation for meditation. Guided with specific instructions like "first fill your abdomen, then your chest, finally up to your collarbones; on exhale, empty from collarbones, chest, then abdomen." Commonly practiced seated, but can also be done lying down.

Notes for Instructors

Guide students to "not just inhale a lot of air, but to be aware of the wave of breath, allowing Prana to permeate every corner of the body." Explain that conscious Complete Breath in daily life can help maintain mind-body health.
