Bhramari (Humming Bee Breath)

Bhrāmarī

भ्रामरी

Bhrāmarī takes its name from "Bhramara" (the black bee).

Meaning of the Term

Bhrāmarī takes its name from "Bhramara" (the black bee). It refers to a calming breath in which the exhalation carries a soft, steady humming sound, sending a gentle vibration through the head and quieting the mind.

Background

Counted among the classical Kumbhakas, it is prized for soothing the nervous system, dissolving stress, anger, and mental agitation, and turning awareness inward through sound. The humming resonance is said to calm the mind almost at once. — Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā, Ch. 2.

Usage in Yoga Context

Sit comfortably; optionally rest the fingers lightly over the ears or eyes (Ṣaṇmukhī Mudrā). Inhale gently, then exhale with a smooth, low humming like a bee, feeling the vibration in the skull. Repeat for 5 to 10 rounds, resting in the stillness that follows.

Notes for Instructors

Emphasize a soft, even hum rather than a loud one; the value is in the subtle vibration, not volume. Recommend it for anxiety, insomnia, and before meditation.
