Karuṇā means "compassion," "sympathy," or "the wish to alleviate suffering" in Sanskrit. It refers to the state of mind that deeply empathizes with the suffering of others and genuinely desires to alleviate that suffering, or the actions stemming from that desire.
It is one of the Four Immeasurables (Brahma Viharas) in Buddhism and is deeply related to the Yogic ethical principle of Ahimsa (non-violence). Compassion transcends ego, recognizes connection with all beings, and forms the foundation for universal love.
In meditation, students are encouraged to cultivate compassion towards themselves, others, and all living beings. Guided with phrases like "connect with the world with a compassionate heart" or "direct awareness to suffering beings." Instructors convey that compassion expands the heart and the importance of selfless service to others.
Emphasize that "compassion is not mere sympathy but leads to active engagement in alleviating suffering, accompanied by wisdom." Convey that self-compassion is the starting point for compassion towards others.
