Sheetali Breath (Cooling Breath)
Śītalī Prāṇāyāma
शीतली प्राणायाम
It is a breathing technique where air is inhaled through a curled tongue (like a straw) and exhaled through the nose, also known as the "Cooling Breath."
Śītalī means "cooling, calming" in Sanskrit. It is a breathing technique where air is inhaled through a curled tongue (like a straw) and exhaled through the nose, also known as the "Cooling Breath."
It is believed to cool excessive heat (Pitta) in the body and calm the mind. It is said to quench thirst and help alleviate indigestion and high blood pressure. It soothes mental irritation and agitation, bringing tranquility.
Practiced on hot days or when feeling overheated. Commonly performed seated. If curling the tongue is difficult, instructors may suggest Sheetkari Breath (Śītkārī Prāṇāyāma) as an alternative, which involves inhaling through lightly clenched teeth.
Advise "caution for students with cold sensitivity or low blood pressure," guiding them to practice according to their body's condition. Emphasize that this breathing technique is a tool for calming mind-body heat and restoring inner tranquility.
