Apana Mudra (Purification Gesture)
Apāna Mudrā
अपान मुद्रा
It is a hand gesture where the tips of the thumb, middle finger, and ring finger touch, with the index and little fingers extended.
Apāna Mudrā is comprised of "Apāna" (descending Prana) and "Mudrā" (seal). It is a hand gesture where the tips of the thumb, middle finger, and ring finger touch, with the index and little fingers extended. It aims to eliminate impurities from the body and promote purification.
The middle finger symbolizes the ether element, the ring finger the earth element, and the thumb the fire element. Their union is believed to activate the flow of Apana (energy of elimination and purification). It is said to aid in alleviating indigestion, constipation, and menstrual irregularities, and support detoxification.
Formed during meditation and Pranayama, with palms facing up on the knees. Used when seeking internal purification or detoxification, or when experiencing digestive discomfort. Instructors explain the purifying effect of this Mudra during guidance.
Encourage students to "focus awareness on the fingertips and visualize the expulsion of unwanted elements." Recommend daily practice for students aiming for digestive improvement or detoxification.
